[See story in December 2010 Archive]\u00a0 As the Life<br \/>\nSpirit of Christ fills that very special place on earth and also fills our hearts to abundance in this most sacred of all\u00a0seasons, we felt it timely to revisit, if not by pilgrimage, at least by our joyous reverence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/astrowin.org\/rffriends\/wpx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/gingerbread-temple-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3887\" title=\"gingerbread temple 2\" src=\"https:\/\/astrowin.org\/rffriends\/wpx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/gingerbread-temple-2-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"377\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin State Journal\u00a0 printed a recipe for gingerbread recently which included the construction how-to for building the confectionary structures. \u00a0That brought it to mind, so we thought, why not bring those charming pictures back for all who did not see them last year\u00a0and as a sweet remembrance for those who did. \u00a0After all, nostalgia feeds on repetition, and\u00a0repetition builds the vital body.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3889\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a vision in your mind and draw the plan of your intended structure, thus creating the archetype;\u00a0 then, it is time to begin the other labor, that of mixing the ingredients for\u00a0the dough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<strong>Gingerbread<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 3\/4\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cups flour<\/p>\n<p>1\/2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 teaspoon salt<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 teaspoon ginger<\/p>\n<p>1\/8\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 teaspoon cloves<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 teaspoon cinnamon<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 tablespoon baking powder<\/p>\n<p>2\/3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cup molasses<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 egg, slightly beaten<\/p>\n<p>1\/2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cup brown sugar, packed<\/p>\n<p>1\/2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cup vegetable oil<\/p>\n<p>Sift together the dry ingredients.\u00a0 Add the remaining ingredients and mix\u00a0 together thoroughly for dough.\u00a0 Chill\u00a0overnight or longer.<\/p>\n<p>Roll the dough out in an 11 x 15-inch\u00a0 rectangle on an oiled piece of foil and place it on a cookie sheet.\u00a0 Bake at 300\u00b0 for 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3895\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gingerbread House Plan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After baking, place the paper or cardboard\u00a0 pattern on the hot gingerbread (the pattern\u00a0on the right\u00a0can be scaled to your\u00a0 project).\u00a0 Cut it with a sharp\u00a0 knife.\u00a0 Lift the pieces carefully and\u00a0place them on a cake rack to cool.\u00a0 The gingerbread\u00a0 should be very hard when cool.\u00a0 If\u00a0necessary, the pieces can be put back on the cookie sheet and placed in the\u00a0oven for five or ten minutes to make them stiffer, as pieces will break during\u00a0assembly if not thoroughly baked.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Royal Icing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 egg whites, at room temperature<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 pound confectioner\u2019s sugar<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 teaspoon cream of tartar<\/p>\n<p>Beat thoroughly in a bowl.\u00a0 The icing is ready to use when it forms firm\u00a0peaks that stick to the beaters when lifted.\u00a0\u00a0 It should have a dull sheen but not be shiny.<\/p>\n<p>Use immediately, keeping the icing in a bowl\u00a0covered with a damp cloth, because it will quickly dry out and harden.\u00a0 Food coloring may be added to color it green\u00a0or other colors for decorating.<\/p>\n<p>For a stiffer royal icing, add more egg\u00a0whites or reduce the amount of sugar.\u00a0 If\u00a0 you plan to eat the house, use meringue powder (available at specialty stores) instead of egg whites.\u00a0 See assembly\u00a0instructions at <a masons prefer using white\u00a0chocolate for the\u00a0mortar to hold the sections together and use the royal icing\u00a0only for decorating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the temple, Roger writes<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u201cAs I recall we winged it quite a bit. \u00a0In fact, Cindy\u00a0 made the 12 sides too tall and they had to be trimmed. \u00a0The circle windows should be cut out of the gingerbread dough BEFORE being baked (so much easier before).\u00a0 The white cake frosting helped in so many ways; it was glue for broken parts; it was glue for non-broken parts coming together; it made the brown temple white; it coated the rice krispy dome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom memory, for the stained glass, cindy and I crushed some lifesaver candies, shaped the crumbs into windows on wax paper, then melted them in the oven.\u00a0 I think we had to trim them into shape after they came out of the oven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe star on top of the dome was done with melted, yellow lifesavers only &#8230;with a toothpick melted into the star and poked into the dome at the top.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the dome, we also used wax paper on the outside, bottom of one of our big bowls ; thenformed a fresh batch of rice crispy treat around it, enough to be sticking up out of the top of the raised &#8220;dodecahedron&#8221; (12)\u00a0sides of the temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater we cheated and used pieces of cloth or a small towel (not edible) under the dome to bring it up to the correct height and also to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Masonic legend relates that the Queen of <\/em><em>Sheba<\/em><em> journeyed from afar to see the wise Solomon of whom she had heard so much.
